DJI Annnounces Next Evolution in Video Production

Posted on

DJI Osmo Gimbal Enhanced Handheld Video SystemSir Winston Churchill famously quipped that “Without tradition, art is a flock of sheep without a shepherd. Without innovation, it is a corpse.” Video production has evolved from pictures, to moving picutres, to film, to handheld video recorders, to digital to the ubiquitous GoPro to the aerial videography of video drones and now is beginning a new innovation with the DJI Osmo. Simply put, the Osmo is a 4k GoPro style video camera attached to a handheld gimbal system. They have taken their DJI Ronin system and made it ultra-portable and easy. Pretty simple, but also incredibly innovative.

By adding the gimbal to a handheld video device, you remove the bouncing that typically is found when taking home videos. This will provide any novice to expert videophile the ability to shoot incredibly crisp video without the motion blur or the video shakes. What professional production companies usually use cameras on rails for, you can now get immediately (no setup time) and anywhere you are. It does hyper time lapse video, long exposure photos without a tripod and 360 degree panoramas with a simple click of a button.

Without tradition, art is a flock of sheep without a shepherd. without innovation it is a corpse.

-Winston Churchill

The system works like most of the DJI camera setups do. It transmits the video to a phone (think FPV on their drones) so you can see in real time what you are videotaping and recording. The GoPro’s have the same functionality with a downloadable app, but this seems to be a more native variety from a company that has made billions of dollars from their drone video FPV tech. Controls are ergonomically placed at the center of the device for easy manipulation of pan and record functions and it appears very intuitive. I, for one, can’t wait to get my hands on it.

The price ranges from $650 to over $2000 (for the x5 zenmuse), so it’s pretty steep (but hey, it’s DJI) and I don’t think that UJ Toys will be carrying this product line anytime soon. However, it is something that I believe the community would benefit from experiencing and knowing about. Share your experiences with us if you have one!
