RC Helicopters Common Problems and Quick Fixes
Remote control toys offer both kids and adults unlimited fun and excitement. RC toys, including remote control helicopters, do encounter problems once in a while. They can suddenly stop working for unknown reasons or sustain damage from a crash.
While the easiest solution may be to toss it in the garbage can, it is definitely not the best solution. Many issues that arise with RC helicopters can be fixed fairly easily by changing the batteries, replacing a cracked blade, moving around a couple of wires or just cleaning up the inside of the unit. Short Battery Life
A dead battery is one of the most common problems, and one of the most annoying problems when it comes to remote control toys. When your RC toy stops working, the first thing to do is check the battery. Having a spare battery on hand is always advisable.
Even if your battery says it is fully charged, it could still be the cause as their ability to hold a charge diminishes with battery age. After every flight session, be sure to recharge your batteries so you’re ready the next time you find the open sky calling. Also consider upgrading your battery to a more powerful, longer lasting one.
Tail Rotor Problems
This is probably the second most common problem with RC helicopters as the tail rotor plays a vital role in just about every movement it makes in the air. You may experience a time when your RC helicopter is spinning out of control for no apparent reason.
This indicates that the problem will be found in the tail rotor. Check the tail rotor motor shaft to ensure a piece of hair or string, or any other debris, hasn’t gotten stuck inside restricting its movement. If there is no visible debris and you are unable to diagnose the problem, you may need to replace the tail rotor.
Over time, when your flight hours start adding up, swashplates tend to wear out or break. They usually lose their ball link connectors, which are the little bars/lines that connect the blade grip to the swashplate. There are two solutions to this problem.
One solution is to try and glue the little bars so that they remain securely in place. The other solution is to replace the swashplate completely. The good news is that you can do this on your own fairly easily and for a low cost.
Last, but definitely not least, are malfunctioning or dead motors. Eventually, all motors wear out, regardless of how good the quality of the motor is. Replacing the motor is an easy task and can be done at home in no time.
Replacement motors are also fairly inexpensive; a more economical choice than replacing the entire heli. And to make things easier, many motor replacement parts come in kits with all of the pieces you need included, taking the guess work out of it.
All in all, the most common problems RC helicopters may present you with are easy to fix. However, if you are having difficulty diagnosing the problem or feel like you’re in over your head, an RC repair service may not be a bad idea.
